Fun, colourful and quirky motion graphics with creative teacher Sylvia Boomer Yang

What is your background?

"My name is Sylvia Boomer Yang. I am an illustrator, animator and GIF artist based in Brooklyn, New York. For my professional work, I create motion graphics, animated illustrations and storyboards for explainers, video series and apps. But what I really love to do on the side is to make fun and quirky animated graphics and stickers that make people smile and help them express themselves."

"I grew up in Taiwan and started with fine art school when I was little. I always enjoyed drawing, but slowly I got stuck by a very traditional education style. I felt like I couldn't express my own personality and voice through the traditional tools of art. Learning about fine art certainly helped me build the foundation for where I am today."

"I switched to design school in college and moved to New York for grad school. That's when I began experimenting with animations and digital art. Animation gave me the power to combine motion and illustration to tell a story in a dynamic way. I really enjoyed learning how I could bring still images to life."

What is the key to making your animated graphics?

"I love to work with a sense of humor plus strong emotions that help people feel connected, playing with different mediums and creating a unique design style. Designing can be really fun!"

"Collaboration/teamwork is one of the keys I evaluate a lot. I enjoy how people spark ideas together in the team, and also believe that great work usually is built by a group of people with different strengths and skill sets.

In daily life, I wouldn't stop creating things that keep me inspired. When not designing, or creating motion graphics, I can be found making a mess in the kitchen (lots of cooking) and creating crafts. I often visit Brooklyn farmers markets and experiment with various ingredients at home. The world is full of magical things, I love to travel and explore new cultures, communities and innovative artwork."
